For the first time in Cairo, the International Conference on Epidermolysis Bullosa in the Middle East and North Africa was held. The Yasmin Foundation organized the event, Debra Egypt, led by Mrs. Hanaa El-Sadat, in collaboration with Debra International, led by Dr. Reto Jean, and in cooperation with the National Research Center, headed by Dr. Ghada El-Qammah. The conference took place from April 25-28, 2024, at the Intercontinental Semiramis Hotel in Cairo.
The conference brought together more than 326 participants from 40 countries, including Uganda, South Africa, Algeria, Jordan, Libya, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Tunisia, and many others. Participants included patients with Epidermolysis Bullosa, their families, advocates, healthcare providers, researchers, students, representatives from medical companies, and several Egyptian officials.
The conference lasted for four consecutive days, covering several key aspects, including wound care, pain management through topical treatments such as ointments that aid in wound healing, itch inhibitors, and how to protect the skin. It also addressed nutrition and the dietary factors that need to be considered for patients, the importance of physiotherapy in improving the mobility of affected individuals, surgical interventions such as esophageal dilation surgeries and finger separation for some children, the significance of psychological support for patients, and the need for ongoing monitoring. Additionally, the conference emphasized the importance of community awareness campaigns to support and empower individuals with Epidermolysis Bullosa, as well as the need for participation in research and consideration of clinical trials.
